Background.
Agatha was born in Gavaldon and raised by Callis of Netherwood.
SPOILER: Agatha and Sophie are twins, born to a woman named Vanessa who was close friends with Callis. Callis was the only one present at the birth and Vanessa thought Agatha was disgusting, telling Callis to throw her out while Vanessa kept Sophie. Callis instead adopted her and raised her as her own child.
Agatha views Sophie as her one and only true friend even after learning Sophie only befriended her as a Good Deed, something she believed would get her kidnapped by the fabled School Master for the School of Good.
In the end both girls were kidnapped at fifteen to be carried off to The School for Good and Evil with one big twist -- Sophie ended up in the School for Evil while Agatha ended up in the School for Good.
At the School for Good and Evil those children of fairytale descent attended alongside Readers. Readers are those who know nothing of fairy tale worlds beyond storybooks; many famous fairy tale characters were once Readers.
Personality.
In the beginning of the series Agatha is grumpy and insecure, agreeing with Sophie that she ought to be in the School for Evil simply because of the way she looked. Many in Gavaldon believed she was a witch and she herself believed it too, viewing herself as too ugly to have any friends and not blaming her neighbors in Gavaldon or her classmates at the School for Good for disliking her. She even refuses to look into mirrors for much of the first book saying pigs shouldn't spend time looking at themselves.
It's not until Agatha begins to accept herself that she begins to see herself as beautiful on the inside as she is the outside. Tedros (King Arthur's son and eventually Agatha's true love / prince) is among the first to take note of her good soul, particularly when she reveals herself to her own detriment to save him during a set of trials where she was trying to help Sophie.
She's shown to be incredibly loyal even at the beginning of the series, constantly turning to help Sophie even when Sophie treated her poorly. As the series continues Agatha is also shown to be very smart as well as incredibly brave, picks up on things quickly and notices both problems and injustices where others can't see them. She becomes capable of making quick plans on the spot, picks up on being a leader as the series progresses and in time comes to truly love herself.
